Mass finishing and polishing in the medical technology sector

The strictest requirements apply in the medical technology sector: there is no room for compromise, particularly when it comes to the surface condition of implants. Thanks to our mass finishing and polishing processes for medical technology, we guarantee optimal results for the processing of products and workpieces (for example during deburring, rounding of edges, polishing of implants and medical instruments) as well as a high level of dimensional and geometrical accuracy. On top of this, mass finishing and polishing are often indispensable pre-treatment steps for electrochemical surface finishing processes in the medical technology sector.

Mass finishing of medical technology products – How it works

Mass finishing is an abrasive surface treatment process that is used mainly for metal workpieces. These are placed in a container together with abrasive particles in the form of loose material, which tends to consist of a plastic or ceramic base that contains hard, abrasive particles. The movement of these particles across the surface of the parts causes wear, deburring and smoothing of the workpiece, as well as removing oxide layers that could interfere with further processing. Polishing the surfaces of medical products, for example, is used for subsequent fine-finishing as this process wears away much less material. Choosing the right mass finishing media eliminates any recesses and fine scratches after mass finishing, resulting in a very smooth and glossy surface.

Mass finishing technology

The rotating or vibrating movement of the barrel creates a relative movement between the workpiece and the abrasive particles, resulting in the removal of material from the workpiece, particularly at its corners and edges (rounding-off edges). The geometry, size and desired surface finish of the parts to be processed determine whether a rotating centrifugal system, a drag grinding system or a vibrator is to be used. Choosing the right geometry and size of abrasive particles enables us to optimally process the components. High-speed centrifugal systems tend to be used for polishing, which often follows mass finishing. The polishing media are selected specifically for the material of the parts to be processed. The size and concentration of the grinding or polishing minerals determine the aggressiveness, the level of wear and the surface finish of the parts. Here at KKS, we have many years of experience in the mechanical surface treatment of stainless steel and titanium implants, enabling us to establish the optimal process conditions for mass finishing.
