Laser marking in the medical technology sector

Laser marking for labeling products has become indispensable in most industry sectors. This method plays a particularly important role in medical technology sector, where the traceability of each product is crucial. By choosing the appropriate laser parameters, we can label almost all solid materials.

Laser marking in medical technology – areas of application

  • Precise and permanent marking of all kinds of materials

  • Marking on complex geometries and freeform surfaces

Laser marking – How it works:

A laser beam is a sharply collimated, monochromatic, high-energy beam of light, which when aimed at a solid surface such as an implant, can achieve different effects depending on the material and laser parameters. When it comes to marking metals such as stainless steel and titanium, a distinction between annealing and engraving is made. During annealing, the part material heats up to below melting temperature at the point of impact of the laser beam, resulting in so-called temper colors (oxide layers of different thicknesses). The energy absorbed is distributed in the material next to the marking but a too intense an energy input results in visible smudging. The energy input during engraving is set so parts of the base material is vaporized, resulting in an incision in the surface. Laser marking can damage the chromium oxide layer of stainless steel and iron may be released from the base material. This makes the parts around the marking more susceptible to corrosion, so the stainless steel parts require passivation again. It is also possible to laser mark many plastics. Depending on the plastic, this is done by means of engraving, discoloration, fading, foaming or layer removal. However, some plastics need additives in order to be marked. By contrast, PEEK, a plastic commonly used in medical technology, is very easy to mark without additives.

Laser marking technology

The desired marking is implemented using laser system software within a parameter set. For every application, there are specific sets of laser parameters that we develop on test parts prior to the routine laser marking of parts. Distinctive part holders guarantee consistent positioning of the marking on the parts. Stainless steel parts are subject to secondary passivation after laser marking – in the same media as for primary passivation. By choosing the appropriate laser parameters, we can produce high-contrast and resistant labels for medical technology products.
